Digital Image Submission Instructions

We have completed our work on how to prepare you images for contest and critiques. Our aim was to standardize our images so they are uniform and will better display your images. We will use Canon Zoom Browser slide show to project the images because it produces images closer to the originals than any of the others we tested. We did test PhotoShop, ACDsee, Open Office, PowerPoint, and several others.

SET YOUR RESOLUTION TO 150 Maxim.  RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO 1024 Pixels ON THE LONGEST SIDE LETTING THE OTHER SIDE FALL AT WHATEVER DIMENSION KEEPS THE ORIGINAL PERSPECTIVE.(600-800

To resize your image we recommend the following:

1. In Photoshop, with your image open click on Image>Image Size.

2.  In the popup window set the resolution first to 150 Max.

3.  Make sure constraint proportions is checked.

4. Under the pixel dimensions change the longest side of your image to 1024 pixels, the other side will be

set automatically.

5. Put a check mark in the resample image box and click on the small arrow then click on bicubic sharper, if you are reducing the size of the image.

and click ok.

6. Go to File and click save as and save as shown below.

7. Name your file as: Your name_group_ title_image # 1(or 2), see below.

8. Make sure you have selected JPEG as the format and check Icc Profile sRGB

(There are many image editing programs out there and I am not familiar with all of them but there should be something similar in whatever program you are using. If you need help let us know and we will try to find someone who can assist you.)

If you are not using PhotoShop: You still need to resize and rename your images to reflect projection needs.

To rename your file:

1.  Open a new file on your desktop named, for example, March Contest.

2. Open each image in your editing program, and resize as above, then rename each as follows: and save as to your new folder, as JPG file

3. As an example, my three entries will look like this:

Milligan_Les_Master_old barn_1

Milligan_Les_Master_fall colors_2

To submit images for contest or critique:

1. Open your email

>insert>file attachment>find your folder

Click on image # 1, then attach image #2

Send both images in the same email.

(As usual this will be different depending on your computer and what system you use.

The most important thing is to title and address properly. )

4. Address your message to the address indicated in your guide

5. In the subject indicate, for example: images for Mar. 9 contest

When sending images for the contest the cut off time for sending images is midnight one week prior to the date of the contest meeting. And for critique meetings the cut off time is 5 PM on Sunday prior to the meeting.

If you cannot get them in by the deadline you might want to consider bringing prints.  However, if at all possible, please send digital images as outlined above.

For now the Projectionist will acknowledge getting your images. If you don’t get an acknowledgment please contact Bill Olinghouse, Don Peters, or Brian Stamm.

Monitor Calibration Information

For optimal results, your monitor should be properly calibrated to assure that the colors are accurate.  Adobe Gamma is included with Adobe Photoshop Elements and with Photoshop. While it is easy to use, it is too subjective for exacting color output. Purchase a colorimeter such as a ColorVision Spyder 3, GretagMacbeth Eye-One, Monaco Optix XR or Pantone Huey. Their websites provide complete product descriptions along with a wealth of information on color management.  Also, go to Dry Creek Photo for an excellent explanation of color management, along with reviews and performance comparisons of monitors and calibration equipment.

Many thanks to Bill Olinghouse and Doug Barnett for all the work they did to come up with what we believe will make your images appear on the screen as close to your original as possible.
